Getting ready for the 2012 Season!
Newton Girls Lacrosse plays in the Founders Girls Lacrosse League (www.fgll.org). The league philosophy is instructional. While there is plenty of opportunity for competitive play during games, the emphasis is on skill building, sportsmanship and being a good team player.
For the 2012 season, we will field 8 teams across grades 1 through 8. Practices will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-7p at the Fessenden School's lower fields off Albemarle Road starting on April 3 and extending through June 8 for the Grade 1/2 level, and through June 14 for all of the others.
Games are on Sunday afternoons starting on April 15 and extending through the big Founder's League Jamboree (for grades 3-8) scheduled for Sunday June 17!
All players must be currently registered through June 2012 with US Lacrosse (need to renew every year) and will be prompted to enter their member number during online registration for NGL. The cost for a one year youth membership is $25 and includes a subscription to Lacrosse magazine.
Each girl will need goggles, a stick and a colored mouthguard (not clear). Most girls in 5th grade and up can use full-length women's sticks. For younger girls, you can cut the shaft down so the shaft (not including the head) is 8-12 inches longer than your girl's arm. Buy at least a midrange stick as the really cheap ones are harder to catch and throw with.
Brine's Sporting Goods on Church Street in Belmont gives Newton Girls lacrosse players a 15% discount. Other sources for equipment are: Sports Etc (Mass Ave in Arlington), Modell's (Needham St, Newton), Thunder Sports (Wellesley),
Commonwealth Lacrosse (Framingham). There is also a Warrior outlet in Brighton.
*Special goalie clinic scheduled tentatively for March 18 2:30-4:30p at Newton North High School in the SOA (entrance near the tennis courts by the Walnut St entrance) or maybe on the turf field behind, weather permitting.
